Great Horned Owl
On Christmas Day, an Oak Brook resident awoke to find this great-horned owl hanging from the wire of Christmas lights in her backyard. With the telephone advice of Willowbrook staff and help of the neighbors, she was able to safely cut the owl free from the wire. The Oak Brook police then transported the owl to Willowbrook where Dr. Karen Higgs and animal keeper volunteers worked diligently to remove the thin wire from the bird.
The bird has suffered damage to its shoulder and remains at Willowbrook for treatment. The bird is being fed a diet of rats and mice. Staff hopes that with time the wing will heal well enough for the bird to be released into a forest preserve.
