Chipmunk in Glue

This Eastern chipmunk was the victim of 2 glue traps that were set out in a garage to trap mice. The husband set the traps; the wife found the chipmunk caught on them and brought the animal to Willowbrook. To treat the animal, staff veterinarian, Dr. Karen Higgs, and volunteer clinic assistants first sedated the animal to reduce its stress. They then heated Canola oil, which dissolved the glue. The chipmunk was successfully freed from the glue trap with surprisingly few injuries. The chipmunk was then washed in Dawn dish soap to remove the Canola oil from its fur.

Within a couple of days, the chipmunk looked great and was released at Danada Forest Preserve…away from all glue traps!

Please remember that trapping and removing an animal is not the solution to the problem and that traps often capture unintended animals, sometimes a pet! If you have a concern about a wild animal on your property, please call Willowbrook for advice.
