Rehabilitation Stories

Turkey Vulture

This turkey vulture was brought to Willowbrook at the end of September from Homewood. The bird was found next to the train tracks with a small scrape on its leg and a fracture near the elbow of the right wing. The broken wing was bandaged and with several weeks of rest, hopefully it will heal well enough for the bird to regain flight and be released.

Turkey vultures are different from most birds because they have a good sense of smell. They use this sense of smell to find carrion, their main source of food. Their smell is so good, turkey vultures can even find food by scent alone, without being able to see it. Because turkey vultures are migratory birds, this vulture may have to spend the winter at Willowbrook.
