Rehabilitation Stories

Green Tree Frog

This green treefrog is a non-native species that was brought to Willowbrook in early December after being found in a warehouse in West Chicago. The business had received a shipment of goods from Virginia and it is believed that the treefrog was on that truck with the merchandise.

Unfortunately, many frogs are shipped transcontinental on delivery trucks by mistake, especially when tropical plants are being transported. When the animal arrives to the shipment’s destination, the climate often does not condone the species’ requirements. These animals should not be released into the area if they are not native. The animal will often die because it is not adapted to survive the climate. Releasing animals, especially reptiles and amphibians, into an area other than where they came from can also lead to the spread of disease. A new disease may be introduced to the area, or a disease that is common but not to that where the animal came from, may take the life of the new inhabitant.

This treefrog was transferred to Tri-County State Park where it will be used in educational programs.
