Rehabilitation Stories

Snapping Turtle

This common snapping turtle was found on Highland Avenue in Downers Grove after being hit by a car. This 18-pound female was probably trying to cross the road to find an area to lay her eggs.

During the early summer months, female turtles are very active and moving about their territories more than usual in an effort to lay their eggs in suitable habitat. Unfortunately, they must cross busy roads and pass through people’s yards to reach their desired nesting locations. Willowbrook receives many female turtles this time of year that are injured by cars and dogs when they are in search of nesting sites.

Notice the fiberglass patch near her hind leg that was used to repair the fractured shell. She should be released by the end of June.
