Illegal Activities
This adult female raccoon arrived at Willowbrook from Naperville Animal Control. She was discovered underneath a resident’s car after being caught in a conibear trap that was illegally set nearby. The lactating female amazingly survived with few injuries and was released into a forest preserve several days after her arrival at the center. The Illinois Department of Conservation police officers have located the person responsible for setting the this trap, as well as over 30 other illegal traps, including several on Forest Preserve property. The person has been fined $75 and has had his trapping license within the state revoked.
This juvenile opossum was the victim of a downtown Glen Ellyn resident. A neighbor witnessed the adult man intentionally shoot the defenseless opossum with a 30” aluminum arrow. The opossum was immediately brought to Willowbrook for treatment. Unfortunately, the animal’s injuries were too severe for veterinary staff to save the animal’s life and the opossum was humanely euthanized to prevent any further suffering.
Again, IDNR officers were contacted about the abuse. The person responsible for this hideous act has admitted to using the 6” opossum as target practice. An investigation is pending and charges are likely to be filed.
