Rehabilitation Stories

Sump Pump Rescue

On January 7, Willowbrook received 3 northern leopard frogs, 3 green frogs, a green frog tadpole, and a very tiny snapping turtle. All were found in a resident’s sump pump in Hanover Park. How they found there way into the sump pump is unknown, but they were likely to have died if they had not been discovered by the homeowner and rescued. One of the frogs is missing a rear leg and falls to one side because of his injury. If he appears to get along fine and is able to capture live food, he will be released with the others in the spring when the waters warm.

Note the picture of the snapping turtle. He is pictured next to a quarter, which shows off his small size. Snapping turtles normally remain in their nest their first winter and don’t emerge until spring. Like the frogs, the turtle will be released in the spring.
